People Listening to the Radio in X Year refers to a series of memes in which imagine people listening to music on the radio during important historic events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, with the broadcast being interrupted with news about these events. The memes are based on a viral YouTube sketch “How Rappers be when a trash feature ruins the whole song.”

Origin

On June 23rd, 2020, YouTuber RDCworld1 posted a comedy sketch “How Rappers be when a trash feature ruins the whole song.” In the sketch, a rapper and two members of his team are enjoying the rapper’s soon to be released song, nodding their head to the rhythm. When a poorly executed feature section comes in, the rapper and his assistants visibly stop enjoying the song and lose their smiles. The sketch received over 1.5 million views on YouTube in one month (shown below).

On July 21st, 2020, Twitter and Instagram user @jozuintern (jozu) posted a meme based on the video imagining people listening to “Wipe Out” by Surfaris on November 22nd, 1963, before the broadcast gets interrupted by the urgent news of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The meme received over 330,100 views, 9,100 retweets and comments and 30,100 likes on Twitter and over 40,500 likes on Instagram in six days (shown below).

Spread

The format did not see spread until on July 25th, 2020, iFunny and Instagram user thememewaves posted a meme based on the video which imagined a reaction of white people to the announcement of Barack Obama winning the 2008 presidential election. The meme (shown below) received over 3,300 smiles on iFunny and 600 likes and 2,700 views on Instagram in three days.

Starting on July 25th, the format gained moderate spread on iFunny, with multiple users posting similar jokes about various historic events based on the video. For example, on that day iFunny user Fucboi69pusydestroyer posted a meme imagining children in Iraq listening to the radio during President Barack Obama’s presidency. On the same day, iFunny user YouCantCuckTheTuck posted a meme imagining people’s reactions to the news of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986.
